After graduating from the prestigious Berlin design school ESMOD, Julia Heuse along with Benjamin Klunker founded their eponymous fashion label Juliaandben. The label has now moved from its small studio to an expansive atelier/studio space in Mitte, Berlin and changed its name to Julia Heuse to reflect the departure of Benjamin. Julia continues to strike a balance between commercial and conceptual, classic and avant-garde and mixes glamour with a unique Berlin street style, creating both mens and womenswear. Her designs challenge conventionality —such as boxy, oversized cuts or draped fabrics in both her designs for women and men— but more importantly, the creations are also flattering. Many of the materials have been tie-dyed, bleached, moon-washed or aged to create different effects. As Bang Bang Berlin eloquently described the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection: ‘The fabrics in the collections have an interesting impact as it reflects the urban lifestyle of large cities at best —tough, dirty and sometimes vamped up.’

Julia’s work has always been about surfaces, fades and structures. Finding beauty in used and damaged objects that are commonly overlooked. Things such as microscosms like a 10 cm spot of old paint on an old window frame or disintegrated walls in buildings. As she elegantly states, ‘Decay can have it’s own eternal beauty.’
